The seul is a Korean zither with movable bridges, based on the ancient Chinese se which is also the ancestor of the koto and perhaps all East Asian lutes with movable bridges.
The seul has twenty-five strings, the same as one version of the se, and is still played in Korea to accompany the guqin in temple music. We are trying to find out how they tune it!
Most versions of the se are only known from tombs and artworks, and the tuning is speculative, but one was played by 20th centrury guqin player Wu Jinglüe, so perhaps his students can tell us how he tuned it.
