The tanpura is a drone-only version of the sitar, with four to seven playing strings and no frets or sympathetic strings. It comes in two scale lengths, the longer being called male and the shorter female, corresponding to the voice ranges which each is more suited to accompany.
It is perhaps more commonly known as the tambura but that name is also applied to a number of other instruments from other geographical areas.
