Baryton

Page history last edited by Andrew Alder 15 years, 8 months ago

It is the opnion of this site that the baryton is the coolest instrument imagineable.

Six or seven bowed gut strings, and up to twenty-four unbowed metal ones, commonly twelve, which served as resonant strings and were also plucked with the left thumb through the open back of the neck.

Also known as bariton, barydon, paradon, paridon, pariton, viola paradon, viola di bordoni, viola di bardone, and viola di bordone.

Tuning of the seven bowed strings as used by Joseph Haydn and his patron Prince Nikolaus Esterházy:

  • A' - D - G - c - e - a - d'
