Guqin

The guqin or qin is a fretless zither with seven strings and many tunings, known in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. A recording of a qin piece was included on the Voyager Golden Record.

In China, qin playing was considered one of the four arts of the chinese scholar. The name qin means musical instrument, and guqin means old musical instrument. Accompanied by the se, it held an important place in both temple and court music.

In Korea, the qin is known as the geum, and is still used in Confucian ritual music, together with the seul. In Vietnam, it is known as the cam.
