Historic guitar tunings

16th Century

 

The guitar had four courses each of two strings. There were two tunings:

 

  • G - D - F# - B (Old tuning or temple viejo)
  • A - D - F# - B (New tuning or temple nuevo)

 

The courses were tuned in unison except for the lowest, which was tuned in octaves.
