with thanks to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not for the idea
It's a work in progress, and always will be. See the disclaimer.
It's as neat and tidy as convenient and necessary. And that's not very. See page names for the general philosophy. It's not that there's anything wrong with neatness and tidiness, it's just that it's not a priority.
It's written for everybody. As little knowledge as possible is assumed. As much relevant information as available is given.
It's written for everybody. We try to assume zero base knowledge on any particular instrument. Please don't be insulted by this. If you knew everything, you wouldn't need to read the site (but please, in that case (;-> contribute).
It's concerned only with stringed instruments, and focussed only on their tuning. Any other details are just here to help you to find the tuning you want. Scale lengths and string gauges are the most important other details, and we do try to give those consistently. Oh, and the number of strings and courses (of course).
It won't tell you which tuning you should use. It will at best tell you which tuning other people do use.
Historic tunings are here only if someone, somewhere, is trying to use them today. This doesn't ban speculation on what people did in the past. It just means TOEOT reports other people's speculation, rather than doing our own.
It may be admissable in court, hey that's up to the court. But that's not what it's here for.
It's a serious attempt at meeting a serious need. If and when that need disappears, so will TOEOT.
There's no need. The information it contains is not copyrightable.
